Our HEART Counseling Journey

In 2021 I decided to take a leap and open my own private practice: HEART Counseling. It was a dream come true!
But it was also a bit lonely in private practice. Sure, I had colleagues I could consult with, but day to day not having coworkers to talk to between sessions or after a hard day was really wearing on me. And let’s be honest, the pandemic did not help anyone’s feelings of loneliness or isolation.
It had always been my dream to have a group practice, but I wasn’t even sure where to start. Everything I had learned about having my own private practice was either shared by a generous colleague or learned the hard way on my own. But I kept thinking about it and knew that creating a team was the next step for me.

So in 2023 when I saw a note from Miss Angie at the Wonderstudio that one of her Kindermusik educators had graduated with her master’s degree in marriage and family therapy, I decided to reach out to her. Enter: Amberly.
Since September 2023 when Amberly joined me, HEART Counseling has been a group practice. Julie joined us in January 2024, followed by Robin in April that year. By the fall of 2024 Amy joined us as our first intern, and Sam joined us part-time.
And then the craziest thing happened: more and more amazing clinicians wanted to join us! Hollie joined us by the end of January 2025 and when Amy graduated from her masters program, she joined us full time as well. Sunshine also joined us in the summer of 2025.
Over the summer of 2025, I also got many inquiries for other interns who wanted to complete their internship with us. I started to be very mindful of how many clinicians I could actually support at one time. But something really stood out when I saw Elise’s resume. (And it wasn’t just that she’s also from Virginia and went to the University of Virginia!) So Elise joined us as a graduate social work intern in the fall of 2025.

HEART Counseling Today

That was it. Right? That was the full number of clinicians I could support. And we were out of office space! But again when I read Savannah’s resume, I knew I had to meet her. And then I met her and wanted her to join us as well. This time though, I knew I needed to ask for help.
Sam was the Clinical Director of Edgewood College’s Family Center. She’s an amazingly compassionate clinician, thoughtful supervisor, and all around wonderful human. And I was lucky enough that Sam agreed to come work at HEART Counseling full time. Now I had more supervisors to help me support our growing staff!
Eventually, I was able to convince Sam to be HEART Counseling’s first ever Clinical Director as well. We’ve also harnessed Amy’s skills from her first career in business to be our first ever Operations Director. HEART Counseling is about to be so organized and efficient!
In 2026 Makayla also joined us part-time. But we continue to have one big problem: We are out of office space! (And that’s why, for now, Makayla only sees clients via telehealth!) Suite 200 in our current building has 5 offices, and we added an office and a conference room in suite 104 downstairs. That’s just 6 (maybe 7) offices and 11 people.
Growth can be both chaotic and powerful.
Out of Office Space
I’ve had some other really awesome clinicians reach out to me and want to work with us. It is such a high compliment. But we have no space for them right now.
And then there’s the amazing humans who reach out to us for a therapist. It is the greatest honor that you choose us for your mental health care. It’s something that we will never take lightly.
If eleven clinicians each see an individual client, that’s 22 people that could be in the office at the same time. Some of our clinicians see couples and families! We have been trying to fit so many people into our current space…
So, you may have noticed our office has been a bit busy lately. It’s because HEART Counseling is growing! We now have 11 clinicians with us and we are really running out of space at our current office.
HEART Counseling is Moving to a New Location in Madison, WI
We have exciting news – HEART Counseling is moving to a new location!
Don’t worry – we’re not going far!
In the middle to end of July we will move our offices to 8517 Excelsior Drive. We are currently waiting for construction to be completed on our main suite (102). In the meantime, a few HEART clinicians are moving to another suite at 8517 Excelsior.
In the coming days, Julie, Amy, and Sunshine will move early, and begin seeing clients in suite 107 at 8517 Excelsior Drive.

At our new space, each of our current clinicians will have their own office and we will have a larger waiting room. No more guessing, “Which room will my therapist be in today?” No more waiting in the hallway for the office to open. There will be less transition and less chaos!
We can’t wait for construction to be complete so that we can move and settle into our new space fully in late July.
