What Is a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)?

Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are licensed mental health professionals trained in both psychotherapy and systems theory. MFTs diagnose and treat a wide range of individual and relational clinical issues, including:

  • anxiety
  • mood disorders
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • neurodivergence
  • trauma & trauma disorders
  • marital and other relationship stress.

Even when conducting individual therapy, MFTs consider all the systems a client is part of. For example, a MFT will want to know about your:

  • family & family history
  • work
  • faith and spiritual life
  • cultural background
  • identity

However, MFTs just want to understand these systems in isolation. MTFs also consider how these systems interact with larger political and economic dynamics.

The relationships, cultures, expectations, and norms that come with these systems shape how a client experiences their struggles. They can also be an important source of support and strength as the client works toward their therapeutic goals.

This broader, systems perspective is what makes marriage and family therapy unique and holistic.

Every person is shaped by the relationships, communities, and experiences that influence their life.

How Marriage and Family Therapists Work With Individuals, Couples, and Families

When working with couples and families, MFTs treat the relational system itself as the client.

Treating the system as the client means that MFTs must build rapport and maintaining balance in the therapy room. In order to work with a relational system effectively, it is important for each person in the system feels respected and heard.

At the same time, MFTs observe and name the relational patterns that contribute to stress while offering psychoeducation. These tools help couples and families gain insight into changes that can be made to help them reach their therapeutic goals.

MFTs view working with families of minor clients as essential to providing ethical and effective therapeutic support.

This same approach is taken when MFTs see individual clients who are under 18. Often times, MFTs search for the balance between protecting minor clients’ confidentiality and privacy while also advocating for their voice in pursuing changes to the family system that support the therapeutic goals.

Ethics and Compassion in Marriage and Family Therapy

All licensed mental health professionals abide by a code of ethical standards of practice. For MFTs, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Code of Ethics serves as a non-negotiable North Star in practice.

This code of ethics sets clear standards for how MFTs provide treatment, manage therapeutic relationships, and protect clients.

Our Marriage and Family Therapists here at HEART Counseling in Madison WI take pride in fostering therapeutic relationships built on compassion, curiosity, confidentiality, and unconditional positive regard.

These principles support a trauma-informed therapy approach that recognizes each client’s unique experiences, strengths, and goals.

Collaboration Is Central to Marriage and Family Therapist’s Approach

In order to understand a client in their full context, MFTs value collaboration with the other healthcare and community professionals in a client’s life.

MFTs often work with the psychiatrists, school counselors, primary care providers, social workers, and other professionals who serve as important resources and supports for clients.

When collaboration could be beneficial, MFTs include clients in the decision to consult. Consultation is done to support clients as they work toward their goals and healing. This is just one example of how MFTs approach the client as the expert of their own experience by taking a collaborative approach to therapy.

While MFTs may provide psychoeducation on relational patterns or psychopathology, those providing trauma-informed care often take the client’s lead on what they would like to discuss and address in therapy.

Early on in our education and training, MFTs learn about the concept of equifinality. Equifinality is the understanding that the same end goal can be reached through multiple pathways.

Thus, equifinality is central to marriage and family therapy practice. MFTs deeply believe that change can be created, and healing can be experienced, through multiple avenues. This releases pressure from clients to discuss issues they may not be ready to examine.

Why Choose Marriage and Family Therapists?

Whether you are seeking individual therapy for anxiety, trauma, or navigating conflict with a partner or family member, an MFT is trained to understand how relationships, culture, identities, and environment shape what a client experiences.

This relational lens, paired with a firm commitment to ethical, client-centered, trauma-informed care, makes a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) a strong choice for anyone who wants therapy to consider their individuality within their unique context as a source of understanding, resources, and healing.
