Therapy for Teens

Adolescence is a challenging developmental period.

Even though the teenage years are already a period of “storm and stress,” teens today are living through a uniquely challenging era.

Today’s teens have recently dealt with a global pandemic, which caused disruptions to their learning and development. Pressure from peers and social media are at the highest ever; we are just beginning to understand the impacts social media has to teen mental health.

And these new stressors are in addition to the “usual” teen struggles.

At HEART Counseling, we specialize in helping teens in dealing with:

  • Upsetting events (trauma)

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Social struggles

  • Friend problems

  • Identity issues

Our therapists can help with many difficulties at school, at home, or with friends.

We do this by helping teens learn about how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected.

Having a safe space to learn about and talk about your feelings can be life changing.

Once we can identify how we feel, we can work on changing it.

It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.

We know that many teens don’t want to sit on a couch and talk about their feelings.

Our approach with teens is interactive. We have lots of fidgets in our offices and often use art or other creative means to help with expression. For example, we may use creative avenues to help your teen learn about and express emotions, social skills, body sensations, and more.

Your teen and their therapist may connect over chess or a puzzle, or play other games to get the conversation going. We enjoy connecting with your teen over their interests and meeting them where they are.

With our teen clients, we love to cater to their individual needs and are able to adapt and change based on how they are engaging in their therapy work.
